The Depot Gallery presents “A Thin Place,” an exhibition of conceptual fine art photography featuring surrealist self-portraiture by Lauren Midgley. Nuclear Okra will provide live music from 7 to 9 pm for the 6 to 9 pm opening reception on Friday, January 10, 2020.
Midgley explains that “In ancient Celtic heritage, the veil between this world and the eternal is said to be only three feet apart. Celtic tradition also tells of places where the veil between these worlds is more narrow. This is ‘a thin place’ where truth abides, both beautiful and violent.” Midgley utilizes illustrative photography, employing advanced digital manipulation techniques, as a means to seek out these thin places through exercises of deepened creativity, hoping to “uniquely foster deep connection and captivate her audience.”
Lauren invites the viewer to vulnerably share her experience in the thin place as it relates to uncomfortable realities of the human condition and the spiritual heart. Aiming to create a place for conversation around the intersections of art, mental health, and the spiritual life, she hopes her photographs “offer a safe space to acknowledge the heart collectively.”
